Isn't it proper to stand up while singing the National Anthem?

I attended a 911 ceremony at a school and all the children were sitting down while singing the National Anthem.
Isn't it proper to stand up while singing the National Anthem?
yes, it's proper and customary to stand up, at least.

it's also customary for men to remove their hats (except for religious headgear and those in military and police), and people in general to put their right hands over their hearts.

the children should have been instructed in this custom. if you have anything to do with it, you should write a friendly letter to the principal.

EDIT: for a high school there's no excuse...
Reply:police and military should not remove their hats because they are already engaged in performing a defensive service of some kind for the nation. a salute from them is enough. i have NEVER seen them remove their hats. Report Abuse

Reply:...and it is proper and official protocol for active duty police and military NOT to remove their coverings... Report Abuse

Reply:Yes and hats off with right arm against heart
Reply:your defienetly supposed to!!

we always have to @ our skool.
